RECLAIMING EUROPE: UKRAINIAN REVOLUTION AND RUSSIAN WAR

Last year Ukraine has seen protests, revolution, and a counter-revolution from abroad. The Ukrainians on all squares were struggling for establishing democracy in their country. The protest called Maidan faced unprecedented police violence, repressions and terror organized by the state apparatus of Ukraine. Millions of the Ukrainians raised against the corrupted oligarchic regime, which was supported by the Kremlin, and they won. Russian authorities reacted by an armed invasion onto the Ukrainian territory, annexing Crimea, sending troops into eastern Ukraine, threatening to dismember the country, and suppressing Russian civil society.

The presentation focuses on the European essence of the peoples’ uprising in Ukraine, functioning of public institutions in the revolutionary situation, in the conditions of war and occupation, as well as on the connections between symbolic and real violence and its influence on political processes in Ukrainian society after Maidan. During the events on Maidan political and revolutionary power of visual image was consistently realized, the phenomenon of Maidan can be considered as a “visual revolution”. Therefore within the presentation the screening of the film Integration by Oleksiy Radynski will take place. Based on months-long observation of public manifestations during the uprising on Maidan, the film questions the connection between democracy and violence, as well as political action and religious ritual.
